Specialists in Learning Wounds
The theory of Learning Wounds is a new field emerging from Warwick University. Coined by the Director of Psychotherapy department, Phil Goss, the term has been the focus of a research group there spanning the fields of mathematics anxiety, education, psychotherapy and careers studies.
Learning wounds are the learning harms that students experience in schooling environments that might be psychological, social, cognitive, short-term or long-term. The identities that we inhabit as students can often carry over into our working lives unless we deal with them earlier in our journeys.
As one of the founding members of the research group, Naomi Sutherland, founder of Strategia Education, is a specialist in the area of learning wounds.
“I was invited to a focus group at the university where I am studying an MA in Career and Coaching Studies and was immediately hooked-it was the phrase I had been looking for all along. I suggested we put on a talk and after that we began researching the field more formally.”
“The solutions to healing learning wounds can fall across disciplines. It could be that students are panicked about learning, in which case, we would invite a specialist in learning anxiety for support. It may be that students need to discover the relevance of their studies to the real-world, in which case, the solution might be mentoring. We pick and choose from our services to provide a tailor-made, innovative solution to your child’s learning needs, so they heal those wounds, find their confidence, and discover those hidden talents in preparation for an enriching future. Everyone has learning wounds-they are nothing to fear.”
