Subject choice is an often overlooked part of the education and career strategising process even though it is arguably the most important. This is just not because the wrong subject in school can be draining, though of course, it can be, but more because choosing the wrong subject means the way you are thinking about your decision-making may be flawed.
We feel under pressure to choose subjects that will get our children into the top universities. Or we feel that some subjects are more likely to be ‘good for us’. Or we think about future planning and decide on subjects that are the best investments given the unpredictability of the world.
All these considerations have value. It’s important to remember that we are always thinking of our children’s best interest. As educators we are the same: whatever we advise, we are trying to give the best answer.
But the key to making the right choice actually isn’t out there but with your child directly.
Subject choice is about knowing yourself and having the confidence to believe that what you enjoy matters to your future.
Watch for cognitive patterns. Where does your child feel comfortable? What excites them? They have natural aptitudes, work with them.
