Alec’s Journey from Uncertainty to Success in Journalism

Their mentoring was amazing. They motivated me to follow my dream and didn’t let me forget that while work can be hard, it’s not a reason to give up.

Alec Bertina, a passionate researcher and writer in international relations, began mentoring in 2019 while pursuing his BA in International Relations at the University of East Anglia. With a keen interest in weapons, conflict, terrorism, and militia groups, he pursued an MA in International Security, graduating with Merit. However, after finishing university, Alec faced months of unemployment, which led to feelings of demotivation.

Through mentoring, Alec discovered that journalism was his true calling. With a little encouragement, he persisted in sharing his insights online, even as paid opportunities remained scarce. It soon became clear he was in the right field, doing the right work, despite the challenges.

Alec’s dedication paid off. His online posts turned into articles for leading platforms like Grey Dynamics, CTC Sentinel, Nos.News, Taggespiel, Unherd, and Militant Wire. Within just six months, he earned a featured slot on CNBC. The guidance and encouragement he received through mentoring helped him stay focused, build his portfolio, and break into the competitive field of journalism.
